Gümüşhane Province (literally meaning "Silver House"), situated on the Silkroad (from China to Trebizond), is named so for its silver mines. Founded at around 3000 BC, the city is known for its historical structures as well as its natural beauty and magnificence. Ski center, waterfalls, extinct cities and caves attract tourists to the area. Karaca Cave, which is city's most important landmark, is first discovered by a Geological Engi983 to neer by the name Şükrü Eröz thanks to the studies that were conducted from 1983 to 1990. An intensive work was carried in order to make the cave a touristic attraction. Finally opening in 1996, cave has become a place of true landmark.
Location of and Transportation to the Cave
Caves are known to be the first settlement spots for humanity. Humans used to live in caves, in their natural houses, especially before agriculture. For this reason researches are being conducted on caves for a long time, including today. The Karaca Cave, which was revealed thanks to these works that are conducted, was found in the Cebeli Village of Torul district of Gümüşhane.
Cave is situated 17 km away from the city centre and is 1550 meters above the sea level. In the city Gümüşhane is used to go to Trabzon on the twelfth kilometer of the main road, leaving a road for four kilometers. There is a 4-km-long junction situated on the Gümüşhane-Trabzon highway (12 km in). Visitors can enjoy the 4-km-long road as it is asphalted. In addition there are places like stopovers and gardens for visitors to enjoy.
Karaca Cave's formation consists of basaltaic, andesit and anglomera.The cave is made up of massive limestones called volcanite.Formation of dripstones in the cave also adds a distinctive beauty to the cave. Deepness of these dripstones can be up to a kilometer. The cave is made up of four pools that are similar to elliptical shape.
Water System in the Cave
Althouh there's no stream within the cave, continuous flow of water through the cracks on the ceiling causes dripstones to continuously form. There are also small ponds in the cave.
Moisture increases as you step into the cave from the entrance. Cave is cool during the summer whereas it is warmer than outide temperature during the winter.
