Süleymaniye District, also known as the old Gumushane. It is located on the south-west of the city center and 4 km away from the city center. It has always been important during the history due to the richness of the silver and gold mines. During the history of the region, it has become a crossroads of many civilizations and cultures due to its mineral wealth and its geographical location.

About The Suleymaniye Neighborhood

In the Suleymaniye District, the Iskender period was the first rule and then it is located in the Pontus State and the East Roman Empire. After the Seljuq and Mongol rule, Akkoyunlular, Karakoyunlular and Trabzon Greek State captured it. It is recorded in the 13th century that this district has a population of approximately 60 thousand people in 10 neighborhoods. In 1461, it is subordinated to Ottoman Empire. The center, which was moved to the present region by Suleiman The Magnificent, continues its existence until today. At the beginning of the 1900's, mining was completely over. Therefore, the city gave too much migration.

 

History of Suleymaniye Neighborhood

Assurans, Persians, Medes, Urartians, Macedonians, Roman Empires, Pontus Kingdom, Umayyads, Seljuqs and Ottoman Empire continued to dominate in Suleymaniye Neighborhood for many years. The domination of the Turks in this zone began in 1461 during the period of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Suleymaniye Neighborhood completed its settlement and development during the period of Suleiman the Magnificent. There are many historical monuments such as churches, baths, shops and bridges and they have arrived today. Suleymaniye Neighborhood is alongside of urban and natural protected area, at the same time it is a very beautiful tourism center.

Suleymaniye Neighborhood is 5 kilometers away from Gumushane city center. At the same time, there is a very easy access to Canca Neighborhood, which is 2 kilometers away from here.

Historical Artifacts in The Suleymaniye Neighborhood

The region is very rich in terms of historical artifacts. These artifacts are; Dukkan, Ulu Mosque, Ulu Mosque Fountain, Ulu Mosque Hazire, Haci Tahir Efendi Tomb, Rum Boy’s High School, Camii Sagir Prayer Room, Camii Sagir Neighborhood Rock Church, Suleymaniye Bath, Dere Bath, Kasaklik Bath, Guzeller Neighborhood Fountain, Bagios Lonnes Kaya Church, Hagios Lonnes Church, Hagios Stephanos Church and Guzeller Neighborhood Mosque. At the same time, the zone was declared as an urban and natural protected area.
